Casulo - An Entire Apartment’s Furniture in One Small Box

It might not look like it, but inside this box, there’s an armoire, a desk, a height-adjustable stool, two more stools, a six-shelf bookcase, and a bed with a mattress.

Casulo, the brilliant, modular setup designed by Marcel Krings & Sebastian Mühlhäuser, hides furnishings enough for an entire room — or, heck, an entire apartment — in a small 31″x47″ (that’s 80 cm x 120 cm) box. Two people can lift, carry, and assemble (and then disassemble, when it’s time to move) each piece of furniture within the Casulo in about 10 minutes — it requires no tools for assembly — and every part of the boxy exterior is used, negating any need for extraneous, wasteful packaging. Smart.

Casulo won the “Abraham & David Roentgen Award” in November 2007 for its “cleverness, finesse and qualitative realisation of the idea” and we think it’s quite well-deserved; what a perfect solution for frequent movers and small space dwellers alike. More pics, plus a video, of the unboxing process

Interior designer’s nightmare: magnetic curtains

Florian Krautli’s magnetic curtains design is something that makes interior designers queasy. The idea behind these curtains is to allow the owner to shape the curtains however desired, thus providing the perfect amount of light, separation and such. Then again, the magnetic curtains would eliminate any kind of smooth, swooping lines that curtains are accustomed to and interior designers thrive off of.

Personally, I would like to see a magnetic shower curtain so not only could I sing in the shower, but I could also sculpt. We’re not quite at electronic curtains, but this is a definite start to taking a simple products like curtains and bringing them into the 21st century.

A fighter jet and a motorcycle made sweet love, birthed $82,350

How many bucks would you spend to watch a Jet and a bike make love? Not very many I guess, but you must be curious to see the result of this rather unfortunate procreation. Meet MonoTracer! The futuristic looking vehicle is actually a real-life working model and is being built and sold by Peraves.

Basically, MonoTracer is an advanced version of the normal bikes. A cabin mounted on a bike and the drag gets minimized to a great extent, making MonoTracer highly effective at achieving high speeds and greater levels of safety. The vehicle flies at a top speed of 250 kmph and can go from zero to hundred in 5.7 seconds. So time for the distressing factor now: the price. You must doll out $82,350 for a MonoTracer. But hey, the coolness associated with this one makes the buying decision a no-brainer.

Ever been on a train this nice?

Believe it or not, the photo above is of a train interior in Japan !

With the results looking nicer than most nurseries, the Japanese have taken the idea of 'child-friendly public transport' to the next level with these 2 beauties, both designed by eiji mitooka. He was the artistic force behind 'omoden' (toy train) and 'ichigo ec' (strawberry train), a couple of regional trains which travel on a daily basis on the 14.3km kishigawa line in japan..

The Japanese are intent on making train travel a more comfortable experience for everyone, women and children especially, and the results are incredible.

Both trains contain hundreds of toys, TV screens showing cartoons, immaculately clean wooden flooring and cots for younger children. Call me cynical but I can't imagine anything like this emerging in India unless it was an attraction at a theme park.
